CHROMUIM

FACTS

  • Stainless steel is made up of at least 10.5% chromium. Other metals are added to make the stainless steel stronger

  • The main use of chromium is in stainless steel

  • Also used for industrial purposes

PHYSCIAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

  • Corrosive resistant

  • Blue-white-silver in colour

  • Hard and brittle

  • Atomic mass = 51.996 g

  • Melting point = 1907 °C

  • Boiling point = 2672 °C

MINING CHROMIUM

  • Chromium is mined as chromite

  • Chromite is a mineral made of chromium, iron, and oxygen

  • China is the biggest user of chromite: they also produce the most amount of stainless steel

  • The USA, India, Kazakhstan, and South Africa mine the most chromite

  • Chromite is mined differently depending on where the deposit is

  • If the chromite is high-grade, it might have to be hand sorted and screened

  • If it is low-grade, machines are used to sort it

  • Chromite has to be removed from the ore after it is mined because of the condition it is in when it is mined
